That AO3 Stat Meme

This one is interesting, and I nabbed it from [ profile] flambeau. The idea is to list one's current top 10 (in terms of hits) stories on AO3 and check back annually to see what changes and how. I will henceforth mentally associate this meme with tax season, which can only improve the latter.

16,020 - Ach, des Knaben Augen (Inception, written January 2011)
15,526 - Let Not My Love Be Called Idolatry (Inception, written February 2011)
13,498 - How Not to Fly (SGA, written September 2010)
8,304 - Under the Steinway (Inception, written January 2011)
8,241 - Between the Notes (Inception, written February 2011)
8,015 - To Capture, Conquer, and Court (Inception, written December 2010)
7,565 - Whither Thou Goest (Inception, written February 2011)
7,428 - Fever Pitch (Inception, written January 2011)
7,382 - In Duty Homeward Shall We Fly (Inception, written February 2011)
7,138 - What Need (Inception, written January 2011)

It's not surprising to me that Steinway!verse takes up 60% of the top 10, though of course I think hit counts for some of the shorter fics in that verse are inflated hugely through their association with my #1, Ach des. I'm surprised by how wordy my titles are, especially as I'm recently on a "brevity is...wit" kick with summaries and titles. I adore that my ridic plotless wonder of a HS AU is #2, but I admit I'm more delighted that SGA made the list, as I only started posting to AO3 as my SGA days waned. I have a nagging doubt that I am going to write anything in the near future to top the popularity of Ach des Knaben Augen, but I guess that's the point of checking in annually -- to see if my expectations are met or not!

Happy Thanksgiving!

It's Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend, hurray! I am planning to make dinner rolls as my contribution to the huge feast my mom always prepares for everyone. It isn't much, but she usually has everything covered and I've been haranguing her for days about what I might bring. (The funny thing is that she has celiac disease and therefore won't even taste the fruits of my labour; on the other hand, it does make it the one item she couldn't do herself as she can't have flour particles in the air as they even irritate her mouth.)

Things of Gratitude and Stuff )

Lastly, I dropped some love on the anon love meme happening here.  And, because I am still a little sad and missing my dear friends, I added my own name and am now shamelessly saying so.  *g*  Even if you don't love on me, you should go over and love on some of the other fantastic people listed (and the list is here!) because it's Canadian Thanksgiving, my friends, and Rodney McKay approves this message.

Hrm. I think this sets me exactly where I always have been -- middle class. Middle middle class as a child, moving maybe towards middle upper as my dad hit the peak of his career and my older siblings moved on? Of course, now I am a lowly starving artist and I'm lower middle all by myself. Yay!

Hey, has everyone gone and read [ profile] linabean's latest fic? It has hot/sad Ronon! READ IT.

In other news, as I did last year... it's supposed to be the first line of fic written in each month of 2007, but because I, a) write so little and b) so sporadically, here is just the first line of each fic written in 2007:

Year-End Writing Meme 2006

Last year when I did this meme, I was bemoaning the fact that I'd only written 17 stories, vs. the 40 I wrote in 2004 (including Omiai, dear lord!). This year, I clocked in at 18, without the time-sucking monster called Constellation, but I'm oddly content. I look at the list of fic from this year and I realize that I'm happy with almost everything I've written. I honestly don't have time to write more, so I'm glad that what little I've written (not that little, I think it's probably at least 150 pages all told) is stuff that I consider decent fic. So yeah. No whining this year.

Here's the list )

First Line Meme

Today is the Day of Non-Productiveness, which wouldn't be a problem on the Friday before Christmas if I weren't a church music director, for whom this is the busiest work week of the year. (SIX SERVICES in TWO DAYS.)

So, help me be useless! I was skimming old LJ entries over on [ profile] rose_emily and came across this, gakked originally from [ profile] hyperfocused:

Here are a bunch of first lines from my fic. Drabble away in the comments section for this post! And I would be shocked and appalled with myself if I actually counted the words, so don't bother with exactness in that respect. Oh, and no restrictions on fandom -- change character names / place names around if necessary.

For bonus points, the final line of the drabble should be in haiku form.

Let's do it again! )

Off to work now... work, where I have wi-fi. And will be checking over here periodically. *bats eyelashes*

Wow, this is actually my first big flist-related wank, and I've been around for like 3 years now! Bravo to the brave few, y'all. That shit pinged my weird-o-meter *instantly* and I'm glad you guys had the cajones to go all sleuth-y and figure things out.

(I really don't think of myself as a cynical person, but I do pride myself on having a bullshit detector that's, like, factory-installed, and precious little patience for bullshit. And I figure this is like a rite of passage for me as a fannish person because I think I've passed the mystical stage of starry sweet politeness to one and all. Not that I'm going to embrace universal rudeness and cruelty -- just that I'm done with the pretense of being lovable and darling 100% of the time. I'm not really that nice. Shocking, isn't it? Heh.)

(And now I'm totally wondering who on my flist actually thinks of me as a nice person. Maybe the act hasn't been that convincing after all! *g* Hrm, how about a poll?:

[Poll #879562])

Also in the land of Random Pointlessness, a meme taken from [ profile] yin_again:

Copy a line from any of my fics, post it in the comments section, and I have to guess which fic it's from.

I promise I won't cheat. Fic is (mostly) here or on this lj.

God knows I don't show my face around here often enough to merit it -- but I've been poking around the thread and giving out love, so I thought I'd throw my name in the ring too. *g*

How To Play:

1) Comment with your username.
2) Go back to your own LJ and post the link your comment because otherwise, no one will know to come fawn over you if you don't tell them about it!
3) Your friends will leave ANONYMOUS comments to your comment about all the many reasons that you are WONDERFUL, and then they will comment with THEIR usernames and go post the link to THEIR comments and it will be a giant big snowball of love.
4) We will all feel WARM and FUZZY and excited about the KINDNESS OF STRANGERS! YAY!!!

My thread is here. Thanks to [ profile] queenofthorns for doing this!

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: North Central

"North Central" is what professional linguists call the Minnesota accent. If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot.

The Midland
The South
The Inland North

Fancy someone mistaking me for a Canadian! But yes, even *I* thought the people on Fargo sounded funny.

I'd just like to point out that even this quiz concedes that we do NOT say 'aboot', okay? IT JUST DOESN'T RHYME WITH LOUD.

Ten Ways Meme

toomuchplor: (chloe reads porn)
Ten Ways You Know You're Reading My Fic:

1) Commas! Commas! Commas for everyone!

2) Emotional exposition like whoa, so much so that a character will ask a question and you'll have forgotten what it was by the time the other character answers.

3) Sleeping together in the literal sense. I have a weird thing for characters sleeping.

4) Humour in dialogue. Almost all my stories have at least one character who's a smartass. Often it's Chloe.

5) Fetishized domesticity. I pretend to hate domestic!fic but my characters always seem to end up living together.

6) Blowjobs. Yeah, I don't know why either.

7) Characters hating themselves instead of others. Even if he's the one who was wronged, my protagonist is far more likely to sit around blaming himself than the guy who hurt him.

8) Third person point-of-view, sticking with one character for at least the entire scene if not the entire fic. I hate jumping bodies in the middle of a segment.

9) Either no plot at all or far too much plot.

10) A character does something really really dorky and stupid. It's my signature Mary Sue moment.

New Year's Fic Resolutions

  • Dec. 26th, 2005 at 11:31 AM
toomuchplor: (chloe reads porn)
So even though 2005 was probably the least productive fic year ever, I noticed as I compiled the list that I at least branched out in terms of writing. I went from being an almost exclusively Clark-based writer in 2004 (Omiai being the biggest example) to almost 50/50 Lex and Clark POV (with a few others thrown in for variety, natch). I also got far, far dirtier. I think I've had more NC-17 ratings this year than any other kind. I wrote in 2 new fandoms, one of which I will almost certainly return to (SPN). I stuck closer to canon than ever, in many stories, avoiding the shiny shiny lure of the AU. But it got me thinking... what do I want to do for fic in 2006?

A meme! Feel free to steal if you like.

1. My Fandoms: (more fandoms? fewer? one fandom you're dying to try?)

2. My POVs: (is there a character on the sideline who needs a voice? do you always avoid one half of your pairing? or do you want to try writing in 2nd or 1st person?)

3. My Genres: (do you need more funny? more angst? more plotty goodness? less death!fic? more canon, less future? a really good AU?)

4. My Creative Style: (do you want to improv a story? work from wee little prompts? or finally train yourself to plan your plot in advance and stick to it?)

5. My Unfinished Works: (what are you secretly working on? what do you want to abandon at the roadside like so much flattened hedgehog?)

6. My Plot Bunnies: (what ideas will not let you go? do you want to start feeding your muses? or do you want to start sifting through your hundreds of bunnies with more selective eyes?)

7. The One Thing I'd Die To Be Able To Write: (a murder mystery AU where Lex is a castrato? Oh, no, wait -- that's mine. But you get the idea.)

My own version's under the cut tag.

Year-End Writing Meme

  • Dec. 26th, 2005 at 11:31 AM
toomuchplor: (Default)
So last year, in 2004, I wrote 40 pieces of fiction, all-told. And one of them was Omiai.

This year?

17. And 5 of them are practically drabbles.

Where did all my productivity go? Even with the monster beast that is Constellation (very nearly tipping over the 100K mark for wordage now), I wrote far far less -- Omiai was almost the exact same length when complete.

Anyway, here is the list )

So I did this with GarageBand/iTunes, and it's an M4A file... but you all can do phone posts, too. It's just that I'd have to call long distance to do it.

Christmassy Omiai Reading

Gather 'round the fireplace, children while I stumble my way through smoothly narrate a tale.

Okay, now everyone else go and do it! GO!

Let me hear the real you...

Remember like 2 years ago when everyone discovered phone posting and there was this explosion of voice posts? Authors were all reading their drabbles out and it was so cool to hear what people sound like, and I was all new and awkward and lurky and so I didn't participate, just listened and squeed.

Let's do it again!!! *bounces* Come on!!! RIGHT NOW!!!

*glances around*

Okay, I'll start.

What do you want to hear me read?

*warning: voice still trashed from concerts and long lessons this weekend, so I may or may not sound like a frog*
