Year-End Writing Meme 2006

Last year when I did this meme, I was bemoaning the fact that I'd only written 17 stories, vs. the 40 I wrote in 2004 (including Omiai, dear lord!). This year, I clocked in at 18, without the time-sucking monster called Constellation, but I'm oddly content. I look at the list of fic from this year and I realize that I'm happy with almost everything I've written. I honestly don't have time to write more, so I'm glad that what little I've written (not that little, I think it's probably at least 150 pages all told) is stuff that I consider decent fic. So yeah. No whining this year.

Here's the list:

1. Poison and Fire (SV, Clark/Lex)
2. Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs (SV, Clark/Lex)
3. Size Queen (SPN, Sam/Dean)
4. Here Comes the Flood (RPS, TW/MR, JP/JA)
5. You Keep Me High (RPS AU, TW/MR)
6. Duetto (SV, Clark/Lex)
7. Unravel Me (SV, Clark/Lex AU)
8. Dry Erase Heart (SV, gen, Chloe-centric)
9. Various Drabbles (1, 2, 3) (SV, SPN, RPS)
10. Adhere to Me (SGA, McKay/Sheppard)
11. The Code Duello (SGA, Gen, Teamfic)
12. Wanted (SGA, McKay/Sheppard)
13. The Space Between (SGA, McKay/Sheppard)
14. Hold Me Tight (SGA, McKay/Sheppard)
15. The Theory of Acquired Characters (SGA, McKay/Sheppard AU)
16. 3 p.m. (SGA, McKay/Sheppard)
17. Untitled Nap!Fic (SGA, gen)
18. Take the Quiet Road Beside (SV, Clark/Lex)

SV: 6 plus drabbles (vs. 15 last year)
SPN: 1 plus drabble (vs. 1 last year)
RPS: 2 plus drabbles (vs. 0 last year)
SGA: 8 (vs. 0 last year)

Guess it's easy to see how my fannish interests have migrated, huh? *rueful grin*

My favorite: For sheer 'whee!' factor, I think I have to go with Wanted. This story was just hilarious to write (even though it gave me a bit of trouble partway through) and it's really where my Rodney voice finally kicked in. It was hard to get used to writing all-new characters after spending so long in SV!

My best: I have to go with You Keep Me High, because, hello! Barista!Mike! There is no bad there.

Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Dry Erase Heart. It must be a self-indulgent piece, because I can't help but love Chloe a bit more when I reread this, yet -- love. Love.

Most fun story: Here Comes the Flood. Just a bunch of stupid boys, being stupid. I love that.

Sexiest story: This year I've been trying to tone down the explicit and write those compact powerful little sex scenes that some writers do so well... you know, the ones where you scroll back over and over just to unpack all the layers of hot? I don't know if I've succeeded yet, but I like trying. I think in that category, I'd have to go with The Theory of Acquired Characters. It's NC-17 but there are really only 2 sex scenes and one of them is contained within about 3 paragraphs -- quite restrained for me -- and yet I love the feel it has for me, sleepy and intimate and almost casual, but with a big knot of emotions underneath. Here it is, for the record:

“How about you just tell me what’s got you all wound up?” Sheppard bargains.

“Nothing,” answers Rodney, reaching down to palm Sheppard’s cock through his boxers. “Just -- let me.”

Sheppard opens his mouth to object, but ends up sighing instead, and lifting his hips lazily into Rodney’s hand. Rodney strips them both down and turns Sheppard onto his side before hastily slicking himself up and sliding in. They fuck sleepily and languidly until at last Sheppard pushes back hard and shudders through a slow-burning orgasm. Rodney kisses the back of Sheppard’s pointy ear and comes two strokes later. They fall asleep with Rodney still inside Sheppard, sweaty and tangled close together like vines.

Story with single sexiest moment: Okay, and this is where my inner porn perv comes out to play, because on the opposite end of the spectrum from compact and layered and powerful, we have this, from You Keep Me High:

“No teasing,” Michael reminds Tom.

“Oh, I’m fucking deadly serious,” says Tom, and spreads Michael’s thighs wide apart before getting his shoulders under them and --

“Holy christ,” Michael cries, forgetting to hold on, forgetting everything but the clever tip of Tom’s tongue as it plunges inside. Michael’s heels are kicking against Tom’s sides, his back is arched like a violin bow, his whole body is begging. His mouth tries for words but only sounds emerge.

“On your hands and knees,” Tom says when he stops, then pauses to look down at his handiwork, at Michael’s spread and wanting ass. “God, I love eating you out.”

This story was where I discovered my love for sub!Michael. So often, in Clex, we see Lex as being the top, if not literally, then psychologically, and here I got to turn the tables a bit. Though Tom is younger and less experienced, he's the one who pursues Michael, right from the get-go, and Michael surprises himself by liking the hell out of that. And I kinda maybe liked it a little bit too.

Hardest story to write: If any of the above had been genuinely *difficult*, they wouldn't have made the list, i.e. been completed, but in terms of the writerly struggle, probably Dry Erase Heart wins this one. Chloe was strangely recalcitrant in that story for a long time.

Most unintentionally telling story: 3 p.m., because I have a sleepy!boys kink that shows itself here, where nap!fic turns into dirty dirty porn. *g*

You know, I totally love your stories, and the best part about this list is that I can just go right back and re-read.

Just got the card today and the fab "cuppa" icon badge - you guys rock. So many thanks to you both. :)

Allow me telling you again how much I enjoyed and loved "You Keep Me High".

This story was where I discovered my love for sub!Michael.

Though Tom is younger and less experienced, he's the one who pursues Michael, right from the get-go, and Michael surprises himself by liking the hell out of that.

I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Well, I love sub!Michael in the first place so I might be bit biased, but you did excellent job here making sub!Michael very understandable. He has been hurt and exhausted - both physically and emotionally - then Tom revives him. You captured their proceeding beautifully.

And I kinda maybe liked it a little bit too.

Your sub!Mike is so damn sexy. I hope we'll have more TW/MR in this universe this year. :-)

Hee! Your icon! That's the BEST!

Thanks so much -- glad you liked YKMH. It was supposed to be a silly one-off fic for a friend, but those are often the ones that grow out of control. And even though it took a while to finish the story off, it was always fun to write.
