It's Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend, hurray! I am planning to make dinner rolls as my contribution to the huge feast my mom always prepares for everyone. It isn't much, but she usually has everything covered and I've been haranguing her for days about what I might bring. (The funny thing is that she has celiac disease and therefore won't even taste the fruits of my labour; on the other hand, it does make it the one item she couldn't do herself as she can't have flour particles in the air as they even irritate her mouth.)
I'm feeling thankful for having rejoined fandom in the last little while and (because I obviously have trouble coming to a table empty-handed) that I've been able to reclaim some writing creativity and crank out ten stories in that time. Fandom (my fandom, SGA, anyway) has changed a bit since I last participated on this level, but I am still having so much fun with writing and interacting with other fans (familiar and new) that it hardly matters to me.
I'm also thankful for technology. It sounds silly, but I really am. Two of my very closest friends in the world are now living thousands of kilometers away from me but I've been able, more or less, to keep in touch with both of them thanks to Google Voice and Chat. I went through a bit of a hard time this summer when
iykwim moved away. It's not like me (as she would tell you) to be getting teary over anything, but even now as I type this I'm getting a little sniffly over how much I miss her. It's much the same with
sparktastic, though we haven't managed to live in the same city for more than two months for over eleven years now. I have other friends, of course, but there's nothing quite like those certain people who get you, who understand you. *sniffles* (Add to this the sadness of missing
black_siren, who is geographically closer but whom I see even more rarely.) I joke sometimes about how, if I got married tomorrow -- unlikely, but go with it -- all three of my bridal attendants would be flying in for the ceremony. That's kind of sad. *sniffles some more* But yes, thank god for technology.
Speaking of technology, I went all tech geeky and pre-ordered the new Apple TV last month, and it arrived at my doorstep this morning. It was a little harder to get going than I anticipated, but this is on the Apple scale, which means that it took two minutes instead of one. Now I have all my iTunes TV, music, and movies on my TV, and the capacity to stream movie rentals right into it too, as well as Netflix (though this is the anemic understocked Canadian Netflix -- watch anything you want so long as it's vaguely unpopular and at least a few years old! But not too old! We're not made of money for content licensing, you greedy Canadians!) It's been years since I engaged in illegal downloading of music (I'm a musician, y'all, it only makes sense) but I'm trying to be more ethical in my other media consumption too. I'm hoping this new rig will help me to do so. Paying for TV? Insanity!!! And yet I am giving it a spin.
Lastly, I dropped some love on the anon love meme happening here. And, because I am still a little sad and missing my dear friends, I added my own name and am now shamelessly saying so. *g* Even if you don't love on me, you should go over and love on some of the other fantastic people listed (and the list is here!) because it's Canadian Thanksgiving, my friends, and Rodney McKay approves this message.
