Ebook Readers

People out there who use ebook readers for fanfic -- does any of you use an iPhone or iPod touch for this? I've had a couple of different ebook apps on my iPod touch but sadly none of them seems to display ebook files correctly (lack of paragraph breaks, or teeeeeeny text, or weird characters -- the typographical kind -- displayed).

(We don't have the Kindle here in Canada. I know. Sometimes my country is made of lame.)

omg kindle. i wish!!

I made a post about reading e-books on my iPod actually.. errmmm.

there!

i have endless amounts of love for Stanza. But, I did find that it did wonky things with some files (but not all). I found it was only a couple of characters, so I'd just sort of assume what character it was and replace it with something else. The long "-" .. whatever it's called, I would just find and replace all of those to a normal "-".. and that sort of thing.

And when there would be no line breaks, I'd open up a file that had a proper line break, copy the blank area, and then find and replace the wrong line break with the right line break.

(please excuse my complete lack of proper terminology!)

Anyhow... I found that that worked like a charm, and it didn't take very long. Definitely worth it!

Thank you! I'm still having a few issues with line breaks and such in .RTF files but everything else is working quite beautifully. I'd tried Stanza when it first came up and gave up on it pretty quickly. Glad I'm trying it again now!

Stanza. The line breaks could sometimes be a little awkward in the older versions, but the newest one fixes that and adds lots of features.

Cool, thanks! I did try Stanza in the beginning but I gave up on it almost right away. Good to know it's improved.

I don't have an iPhone or a (working) iPod, but I can highly recommend Bebook (http://mybebook.com/). I *love* it. And it's not a kindle - which is a plus because I can read kindle format or almost every other format including pdf's. The Bebook has no DRM which makes it much better than a kindle imho. I've found lots of sites where I can buy ebooks not on amazon, and communities where I can download fanfic... You can't download directly to it, and it's a little clunky, but once the book/story is on it I wouldn't know the difference. There was a mix up with my delivery (the courier, not the bebook coy's fault) and the bebook people followed it up for me and got it sorted - gotta love good customer services. Seriously, I don't own shares, but I would if I could. If you were ever thinking of a kindle, I'd check this out first.

I have neither iphone nor kindle (yet), but
this calibre software came up a couple of days ago in one of the freeware forums I frequent everyday, and I googled a bit, and this came up, maybe its of use for you :)

calibre is a one stop solution to all your e-book needs. It is free, open source and cross-platform in design and works well on Linux, OS X and Windows. calibre is meant to be a complete e-library solution and thus includes library management, format conversion, news feeds to ebook conversion, as well as e-book reader sync features and an integrated e-book viewer.

Seconding Stanza for the iPhone. It's a bit of a pain syncing up the phone with your computer if they're running on different wireless networks but once you've got that sorted, it's very easy to load books up and add cover art.

The only problem with Stanza (iTouch/iPhone) is that it still doesn't import italics/bold etc. Otherwise it's much improved from a couple months ago.

I use the Sony PRS-505 myself. I do think it's sold in Canada.
