Is it just me?

Or does anyone else ever get intimidated by the prospect of answering comments on their own stories?

Sometimes to comments to my entries/comments, even. *g*

It's silly, right? And yet, I honestly think that's half the reason I've been so awful about replying to comments on my fic the last few years. Well, that and trying to think of ways to say "Thanks, glad you liked," eleventy times.

You too?! Man, we writers are as neurotic as they say, huh?

I worry that my answers will be repetitive.

YES. But there are only so many ways to say "thank you!"

Oh yes. If you substitute stories for my entries.

And the longer you leave it, the worse it gets. I'm trying to force myself into answering every comment on my latest because I still get all crazy when I realize I have oodles of unanswered comments on 2-year-old fic posts.

It's like thank you notes; daunting at first, but easier once you get started.

Here, for your edification, are two memorable thank you notes for wedding presents that my husband wrote when he attempted to help me write some.

"Thank you for the thingy. We did not have a thingy like this."

"Thank you for the dinner plate; we love to cook and eat our friends."

Now, you KNOW you can do better than that.

"Thank you for the dinner plate; we love to cook and eat our friends."

It would MAKE MY DAY to get this thank-you note from a wedding gift.

But... but... but... your stuff is so GOOD! I mean, yeah, you're putting your little creative babies out there and hoping for the best - scary stuff! But all the comments I see here for your fics are all rose petals, fairy lights, cookies, kudos, snogs and happy dances. ;^)

*g* But somehow that makes it harder too, because if someone already likes you, you don't want to write something stupid in response to their (lovely and articulate and thoughtful) comment and have them go, "I guess that story was a fluke!" I know, it's dumb.

I have friends who say this--in general, I love answering comments, and I am sad sad sad that I haven't had time to DO mine yet! I find the thing is to think of it as a conversation, and answer like the person was standing next to you, as spontaneously as you can. I find it really fun, actually; a chance to talk to people, open a dialogue.

Yeah, that does make sense. I think it worsens when I've left a particular post/story for too long and I wind up with this ridiculous backlog of unanswered comments, or -- even more so -- when I run out of steam somewhere during the comments and leave half unanswered. And the months roll by and then I think it's way too late to answer them now, but I still feel bad about it and -- well. You see how I'm crazy.

I didn't comment. Does that help? Probably not.

Pssst.

I LOVED your story!!!

Ah, and now you commented by commenting on how you didn't comment. *g*

Thanks!

*nods* For me, it is a bit harder to answer comments sometimes when they're mostly positive.

I think my expectations of how I should respond were formed when I just had four or five people reviewing, and it was always the same people. I could basically throw a private party for each person. Now... not so much. But I think I suck when I don't.
