Rec me!!!

  • Jul. 9th, 2006 at 9:55 PM
toomuchplor: (one of those days)
So I'm off on a church conference for the next week and furthermore meeting up with my childhood pal who now lives in domestic bliss with 2 children and a surgeon hubby (being, of course, a GP herself), and if that weren't enough, yeah. Visiting my grandma.

Of course, to counter all this sweetness and light, I am in need of much slash fic that I can read surreptitiously on the old iBook while the pastors talk about boring un-music-y stuff. [livejournal.com profile] iykwim and I just finished the 1st season of SGA, so rec me anything from S1, any rating. I prefer Sheppard/McKay, or pretty much anything with McKay.

I've read very little in the fandom but certain writers (damn you [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock, [livejournal.com profile] seperis and [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore!!!) have sucked me in already, well before I even watched the first episode. So yeah, anything they've written, I've read. I'd be thrilled if you guys could point me towards other fine authors. Smut or non-smut, either way.

(I know [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn has a syndicated feed of SGA recs, too, and I've only just begun picking my way through that.)

I could totally be persuaded to write in this fandom. I already have like 10 sentences floating around in my head, just waiting to spark on a plot bunny. *g* In case you needed a reason to egg me on.

bwa-ha-ha-ha!! Another one bites the dust.

[livejournal.com profile] astolat's stuff is here (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/#Stargate:%20Atlantis), she pretty much Rules All Things.

Yes, yes she does. *g* Just spent my spare time devouring her S1 stuff over the past few days! Thank you!

I'm taking the easy way out and reccing everything that [livejournal.com profile] resonant8 (read "Advantage"), [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza ("Things to do in Denver when you're Dead"), and [livejournal.com profile] astolat ("Time in a Bottle") have written. They even have webpages up with everything in HTML for ease of downloading -- check their user info for the URLs.

I have some favorites in a folder, but it is terribly incomplete. Still, a partial list of gen, some PG13 slash, and some higher rated slash of the Sheppard/McKay variety:

Stories by [livejournal.com profile] resonant8 are dependably good. "Advantage" is a favorite.

Artistry in Chaos (http://mandysbitch.livejournal.com/211194.html?page=1) by [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch features an ubersmart, never silly, Rodney, which I love.

"Daemonology" by [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone is a *brilliant* story using the His Dark Materials universe feature of daemon's for the characters that gives great insight into them, I think. Don't stop there -- [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone has produced many, many other terrific SGA stories.

I love all [livejournal.com profile] minnow1212's stories, but "Face Value" is my favorite.

"Freedom's Just Another Thing for Nothing Left to Lose" by [livejournal.com profile] synedochic is one of the most amazing stories I've ever read about love and loss… and academia. Just a gorgeous Rodney story.

"Hunting Parties" and its sequel "Consequences" by [livejournal.com profile] ltlj (under the name Victoria Custer) is one of my very favorite h/c stories ever. It's a serious story, but it makes me laugh because it all revolves around John, who can't quite figure out why people left and right are hot for him -- they just are. It's a bit like fandom, in that way. Also, one of my favorite OFCs ever is in this.

Hunting Parties leads into (sort of) the "Retrograde" series by [livejournal.com profile] ltlj (Retrograde, Recovery, Movie Night, Expatriate, Vegas), just an amazing story about what would happen if the original Atlantis team was stranded for 3 years, not 1. It's a sheer pleasure to read. And re-read. It's rather John-centric, though her Rodney is very good.

"No Refunds or Exchanges" by [livejournal.com profile] astolat is perhaps my favorite of the Harlequin-inspired stories in the fandom. This one is about an arranged marriage. *g*

Other [livejournal.com profile] astolat favorites: "Oblivious" and "Time in a Bottle," which are both all about not knowing you wanted until you get it and "Transcendental," which is smoking and complex and terrific.

"Intersections," by [livejournal.com profile] kaneko and "Your Inevitable Unhappy Ending," by [livejournal.com profile] helenish are bothe smart and hot.

"Recognized None but the Southern Cross" by [livejournal.com profile] minervacat is simply beautiful.

"Road to Nevada" by [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse is another nifty AU, set in the lead up to WWII.

"Small Primes and Square Roots" by [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn is another AU, and possibly the only domestic-oriented fic I've found that I really like. It features beautiful, aching *yearning*, one of my favorite things in any story.

[livejournal.com profile] cesperanza's "Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead" is hugely fun. And hot.

For a good time stories that are well-written, sexy and just a hoot, see: "Once Upon a Furry Octopus" by [livejournal.com profile] skoosiepants, "Where Did All the Physics Go?" by [livejournal.com profile] amireal and "Zelenka's Still" by [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna

And oy, there's more. So much more, but I am not nearly as organized as I should be. And sorry about the lack of links -- hopefully the LJ name links will point the way.

It's funny, I know more people who got sucked into this fandom fic-first, rather than show-first. There is *so* much good stuff out there, it's a delightful wallow when you first dive in.

Enjoy!

Just a note that "Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose", "Your Inevitable Unhappy Ending", and "Once Upon a Furry Octopus" are all post-S2 stories. "Road to Nevada"'s an AU, but contains some spoilers for S2, as well.

Already got mentioned before, but [livejournal.com profile] kaneko's Intersections (http://www.anyroad.org/kaneko/intersections.html) is a kinda little bit AU and the best thing I've read the whole MONTH.

I read through all of [livejournal.com profile] out_there's stuff last night when I was supposed to sleep to be able to get up today on 8. It's 1P.M., good morning and well, that's saying something.

Also, everything by [livejournal.com profile] lilysaid, especially Visiting Hours" (http://www.improvidence.net/visiting_hours.html). Even the RPS is good.

[livejournal.com profile] nixa_jane is also pretty good.

And many many more ♥.

I don't know whether any of these will be unfamiliar to you; in fact, I feel like a bit of a tool for reccing some of these, as they're so well-known, but just in case:

Oh, you have netted some very good recs already, I see. SGA is quite easy to follow along with -- the [livejournal.com profile] sga_newsletter is fantastic, and if you use del.icio.us at all, you can actually look at the mckay/sheppard tag (http://del.icio.us/tag/mckay/sheppard) and find out both what is very new and popular, and often hit on some classics that you missed. These are both better techniques for when you're caught up, though, both to fandom and to the end of S2.

Oh, and all my recs are here (http://del.icio.us/murklins/recommended%2Bfanfiction%2Bstargateatlantis) (because I am a delicious addict). Not really separated out into S1 and S2, though, so maybe not helpful to you. Only 44 there, anyway -- I didn't rec anythign at all when I started reading in SGA, just glutted myself wihtout pause for reflection.

Woohoo! A convert! Welcome to the addiction. *g*

I highly recommend the Harlequin challenge stories (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/tag/harlequin+challenge) from [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic. It's the best crack ever! Of these stories I especially enjoyed:

The Blade
Animal Husbandry
The Physicist Bride
The Hostage Major
He's Having Her Baby (by Pru, so you've probably already read it)
A Royal Deception
The Convenient Husband (possibly my favorite one of all!)
No Refunds or Exchanges (okay, maybe *this* is my favorite!)

Also, I highly recommend the stories coming out of [livejournal.com profile] reel_sga, based on classic movies. Here's a link to the master list (http://community.livejournal.com/reel_sga/18219.html#cutid1). I especially loved:

Entanglement
Without Love
Eighty Days Give or Take
The Sound of Science (a la The Sound of Music, priceless!)
Lie to Me
Oo-De-Lally (a la Robin Hood, also priceless!)
The Prisoner of Zenda

Plus, some other stories that look great that I just haven't had the chance to read yet. Enjoy!
