Impressions of a very new SGA newbie

So, I recently acquired the first season of SGA (yes, I've caved under the peer pressure! Damn all of you!) and [livejournal.com profile] iykwim and I watched the 2-hour pilot earlier today.

I've seen Sheppard and McKay everywhere in everyone's icons, since SGA seems to the new crack of choice among SV-ers (for like, a year. I'm slow.) And I never thought they were that attractive, to be honest -- but now I've literally seen them in action, yeah, I get it! Sheppard has such cute messy sticky-uppy hair, and McKay says "zed". Carson also has the cutest Scottish accent in the history of accents.

I gather already that the canon ships are meant to be Sheppard/anyone (which seems to leave Sheppard/Teyla and Sheppard/Weir, with a slightly heavier emphasis on the former) but I'm not really feeling it. I'm not quite feeling the slash yet either, but then I wasn't beat about the head with the slash stick as I was in SV with the 'meet-violent'. I see the potential for chemistry, but not so much the chemistry itself. I suspect it's forthcoming.

I'm not quite diving into the fandom yet -- sci fi has never exactly been my cup of tea -- but I'm totally up for more. Does the pilot actually reflect the tone of the rest of the series? So often they don't, especially with these big producers' pilots.

I had that same problem. The icons didn't do a thing for me. The SGA kids are all so much hotter in motion. Except for Ronon (S2). He's hot anywhere.

The Sheppard/McKay doesn't really start to happen until later, well, like in the very next episode. They don't spend a lot of time together in the pilot. But soon they start to bicker and complain and wind each other up. And they're adorable.

After two seasons I still can't figure out who Sheppard's supposed to be pining after -- Elizabeth or Teyla -- because, like you, I don't see much evidence of his attraction to either of them. But that's a reoccurring problem with Sheppard. He doesn't seem attracted to ANY of the hot babes constantly throwing themselves at him.

Hrm. Sounds like a certain tall farmboy we know and love. *g*

Thanks for all the info! Yay for new fandoms!

I didn't see the slash until Annie made me watch Trinity, a second season episode that is amazing. When I went back to my first season DVDs after seeing Trinity, then I saw lots of slashy subtext (check out The Brotherhood, for example).

I find Carson's accent so horribly fake I do nothing but laugh when he talks and then feel sad when he stops because i like the fakeness of it...

I grew up around tons of Scottish relatives so I know when someone's fakin it lol

*g* All my Scots relatives are like 50 years dead, so I'm more easily fooled.

Well... the bio at IMDB.com on Paul McGillion (the actor who portrays Carson) says he was born in Paisley, Scotland (the sixth of 7 children). Then the family moved to Canada when he was two. He went back to Scotland in his early teens for a few years before returning to Canada.

So how much of his accent on the show is real (I assuming he's picked something from hearing his parents & older siblings speaking & from his teen years) and how much is an affectation I couldn't begin to guess.

Finally...
I totally thought I was the only person left that hadn't seen SGA.

Here (http://just-meeh-here.livejournal.com/6448.html) is my very strange reaction to it.

I totally know what you mean that you cant ship anyone yet. I totally see the McKay/Shepard only because I read the fic before I watched.

This is totally AU so its safe to read but I highly recommend Bell Curve, or, Ladies Night at the Boom Boom Room (http://glitterati.illuminatedtext.com/vday/bellcurve.html) by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock. There are sequels too! Also check out her SV fics.

PS. Sorry for all the totally. I am a Cali gurl but damn its not an excuse.

Oh, I'm very familiar with Pru's brilliance! *g* In fact, she's one of the few people who's tempted me into reading SGA even though I hadn't seen any of the episodes. I've read (and enjoyed) Boom Boom Room -- very cute, and probably more enjoyable on the reread once I've seen some more SGA! Thanks for the rec, though!

Yay! Another one sucked in. *bg*

Seriously, the first episode in which the McKay/Sheppard is undeniable is Hide and Seek... and it pretty much continues on from there. They bicker and snark and generally are just so having the hot monkey sex when no one is paying attention. The defining slashy McShep episode is Trinity in season two, though. It's fanfic right there on the screen.

As a Brit, I think Carson's Scottish accent is pretty good, but then I believe Paul McGillion has Scottish relatives. Anyway, it always stops me in my tracks when I hear his real accent!

It's been a while since I've seen the pilot. But I don't think it reflects the tone of the rest of the series. I liked it but it didn't hook me, but now I'm addicted. I think it establishes them in Atlantis and the later episodes set up the relationships between the characters.

I think part of Sheppard's appeal comes out of his personality, but he is beautiful, crazy hair and all. He's what drew me into the show and kept me watching. But I think the same is true for most of the Atlantis team. There's a lot of pathos and personality in Atlantis and it's fun to watch it play out.

It is difficult trying to figure out whether Sheppard is more interested in Teyla or Weir. My sister and I have come to the conclusion that Weir is way more into Sheppard than he is into her. While Sheppard seems to be more drawn to Teyla. There's an episode in the 2nd Season - Conversion - where, at least to me, Sheppard's attraction to Teyla is confirmed. Hopefully that's not too spoilery. Chemistry is so subjective.

I haven't had time to watch more than the first...5? Episodes. But it's growing on me, for sure.

Hee! Me too. My ships of choice are Weir/Dex and Sheppard/Dex. The show's not as shippy as SV, but even non fen saw the clex on occasion on that show it was so clear. I don't care for Rodney or McShep, which is definitely the fandom ship of choice. I'm enjoying the show, but it doesn't steal my heart the way BSG did. Hopefully that means if won't rip my heart out the way BSG did either. I'm still enjoying the SGA fic and the fandom more than the show. You can find SGA fic recs here starting on 4/27.

I also have some manips, humorous captions and commentary here if you're interested.
