Poll time!

So I'm working towards posting my long-ass fic and I haven't posted anything quite this monumental for 6 years so I wanted to know what you young hip youthful types think when it comes to posting formats for long fic, and for fic in general.  Results will probably inform my decision of where/how to post said long-ass fic in the near future.  Uh, and the 'in parts' thing -- I do mean parts of a completed fic all at once, not installments -- so I'm not talking about posting a section a day or anything insane like that.  WHO DOES THAT, ANYWAY?  (*glares at young hip youthful self from 6 years ago*)[Poll #1618432]

I said AO3 in one page, but if the 'in parts' was in several chapters, since the AO3 allows me to have all the chapters display on the same page anyway, that's also cool. :D

Also, if the poll had allowed multiple choices I'd have ticked boxes both for the AO3 and Dth, as I like both equally, I think, for reading fic.

Ah, I'm such a AO3 noob, I hadn't noticed that feature yet! That makes a difference. Actually, I don't particularly want to post in parts but perhaps that's better for some people if there's some flexibility there which they wouldn't have otherwise.

Thanks for weighing in!

For what it's worth, on Dreamwidth since the posting limit is so much bigger you could probably do many fewer separate entries to get the whole fic in. So if that's a factor to consider...

And I second the comment above about AO3, I really love that readers can choose to list the whole fic on one page if they wish and the author can also choose to have chapters, and they work for both people.

Personally I like one page because I often knit while I'm reading, and it's a lot easier to just hit a key to page down than to click a link for the next chapter, while I'm holding knitting needles and yarn and all that.

I just feel the need to interrupt and say that I'm so jealous you can knit and read at the same time. ::shakes fist at need to look at knitting::

Only easy stuff! I can't do cables and read. But right now I'm making a pretty simple scarf for a friend and that's no trouble at all. (Also I've been knitting since I was 5, that probably helps.)

*nods* With cross-posting I'd have to chop things up for LJ's convenience, unfortunately, or have to post on each site separately.

Yay knitting! I totally do that too. My spacebar has a little shiny spot from scrolling down and this computer is not even 2 months old.

I also picked AO3 all on one page, though DW all on one page, or your site if there's a link to somewhere I can comment easily is OK too!

Yes, I try to make commenting as painless as possible as I'm a total comment lamer and I know laziness will prevail if I have to work at all to leave FB. Thanks for the input! Seems like AO3 is getting most of the votes.

The 'all in one part' is more important than the specifics of where that one part is.

This. Though I have a slight preference for DW or AO3 because it gives me control of the page style.
[identity profile] forsweatervests.livejournal.com wrote:

I like AO3 or DW, but LJ has such a short character limit on pages that it bugs the heck out of me. I'm pro all-one-page, but for a fic that long, I'll live if I have to read it on multiple pages.

Helpful?
[identity profile] toomuchplor.livejournal.com wrote:
Sep. 14th, 2010 01:50 am (UTC)
Very helpful! I'm totally dating myself by saying this, but when I started writing fic lots and lots of fen were still on dial-up so posting fic in several shorter parts was the polite thing to do so they didn't have to wait ten years to load a single page. I guess that's probably a small minority nowadays.
[identity profile] forsweatervests.livejournal.com wrote:
Sep. 14th, 2010 02:01 am (UTC)
...when I started reading fic, most fen were still on dial-up. I don't think you're too dated.

I never really thought about it! I got my fic through email, so it was kind of a load-all-at-once situation!
[identity profile] toomuchplor.livejournal.com wrote:
Sep. 14th, 2010 04:52 am (UTC)
LOL. And I had high-speed from very early on (2001, I think) so I didn't even really know what the dial-up folks were on about. Anyway, I guess it's probably not a big consideration on a page that's only 300K these days.
[identity profile] forsweatervests.livejournal.com wrote:
Sep. 14th, 2010 11:44 am (UTC)
Wow, that is indeed early. I didn't get off dialup until...probably 2005? Tbh, it might have been later than that. It definitely wasn't earlier.

Probably true. I think, at this point very, very few people are on dial-up.

I chose AO3 in one page, but my favorite feature of AO3 is that if you, the author, want to upload your fic as chapters, then I, the reader, can choose to read it as chapters broken up into different pages, *or* I can choose to read it as chapters displayed on one long page. :D Built-in site flexibility = awesome.
[identity profile] jaebi-lit.livejournal.com wrote:

P.S. If it's relevant at all, I like *short* fics on Dreamwidth, because DW allows me to open cut-tags on my circle page, so I don't have to click through to the cut on your journal or click through to a link to AO3. {is lazy}
[identity profile] toomuchplor.livejournal.com wrote:

I have a nifty FF add-on that does that for LJ fic too, but yes. Skipping cut-tags FTW.

Ah, yes! I didn't actually know that until someone mentioned it above! I don't really want to do parts but perhaps it's better to give people the option, then? I've only really used AO3 for a few weeks (and sparingly at that) but I'm really getting to love it.

You can now! You do have to load the fic page itself to get at the ebook links though, which personally means I keep on forgetting about it. Anyway, that doubles my vote for AO3 (or at least *also* AO3) because that automatically makes it have more formatting options for people.

I said AO3 in parts, but I have my settings so that fics will always load on one page there. I just mean "if it feels natural to do it in parts, do that".

I like AO3 because then I can just load one page and also because I love the reading history. Everything else is fairly equivalent for reading, but I get unfortunately distracted from commenting and am much more likely to comment if I'm reading on DW or LJ.
[identity profile] toomuchplor.livejournal.com wrote:

Yeah, I actually think I'd prefer not to do parts, mostly because one part is, like, v. v. short. It makes sense structurally but I think it'd be weird if it was laid out like that with different pages and all.

I'm discovering all the AO3 features reading these comments! History?! AMAZING.
[identity profile] philexos.livejournal.com wrote:

I clicked other, bc usually it does not matter, depends on my mood. However, I do prefer fic on AO3 in chapters, mostly, bc there's an option to read it in one file if I feel like it and sometimes I do. AO3 is crafty, yo. :D

i'll read it anywhere, i don't care, whatever's easiest for you, but i'm only going to know it's there to read if there's an lj post about it, because i don't check my dw reading list with any regularity. so i'd love if you could keep cross-posting the story announcements.

I prefer to get fic in one piece--but I don't mind too much if it's broken up into decent-sized chunks. (I do like the way AO3 allows chaptered fic to be displayed in one big piece.)

The important thing is that I'm able to get the words onto my computer screen so I can read them.

I don't mind reading wherever you'd like to post it, sweetie. But, if possible, could there be a link from LJ as well? I'm still bad about checking my DW reading list but I'm trying to do better.

I don't care where I read it if I read it online, but if it's long (for me long >12k words), I don't read it online, I save it into mobi format for my Kindle. In which case, I prefer it be posted somewhere that it's on one page such as AO3 'coz it's easier. Though I certainly have done the cut-past-next page route for many fics. Really sucks when it's dozens of chapters.
[identity profile] toomuchplor.livejournal.com wrote:

Ooh, fancy with the technology and the Kindle and stuff! I work from home, so it's just as easy for me to use my laptop, but I still have gadget-envy with Kindles and other ereaders. It's funny, because I have never minded reading fic online on a screen but I still prefer paper books for reading commercial fiction. What's up with that?

Anyway, I would be posting in 5 parts at most (though, honestly, probably a bit more on LJ because of the character limit) but it seems like all in one page on AO3 is the way to go.

Thanks for weighing in!

I really like AO3, but as long as a fic isn't posted in tiny, tiny parts, I'm happy. My big pet peeve is long fics that have been posted in 1K parts. It really breaks the flow of a story if you have to stop and klick on a link that often. Breaking up a long fic in some parts for LJ posting doesn't bother me.

I just hope that people that are posting fic to other places than LJ continues to post links to their stories on LJ so I don't miss out. ;)

*nods* No, I wouldn't do that. The fic itself is structured into 5 long parts but I think at least some of the parts are probably still too long for LJ. I'm thinking AO3 is the best way to go here.

I will definitely post on LJ when the story goes up, though!

I don't print it out, I make a txt then pdb file and load it on my iphone as an ebook to read at leisure. Well, no actually I then dash off and read it in one go like a starving person!
So as long as I know it's posted the site doesn't matter. AO3's good though as you can make a multi-chapter thing all in 1 if you want - easier to do a select-all.
