Web Design Question

Okay, so last *March* I purchased an account on voxpopulli but haven't done a damn thing with it. Since I've switched over to Mac, I'm not able to update my site on FrontPage anymore without reviving my comatose desktop PC (and am not willing to shell out the $$ to get FrontPage for Mac) and so it's really fallen by the wayside. I'm trying to use iWeb, but unless you're publishing to .Mac, it seems to be a giant pain in the ass.

So, what would you recommend? Is there a good share/freeware program out there for someone who's only got a passing acquaintance with web design and who cries when confronted with having to edit CSS? I obviously don't need anything complex -- most of my site is just text, plain and simple -- but having my site look pretty would be a plus. I have 25MB space, which should be ample as my current site is sitting at about 20MB and I'm not planning to add anything other than more fic.

I wish I could help. ;_; I use a plaintext HTML ediotr, myself, and routinely only use one stylesheet code, which I insert into every page. ^^'

On the other hand, if you have a mockup of what you'd like the site to look like or pictures and ideas, I could probably make one up for you, if you like. ^^' It would be easy to edit in Notepad or something, then. ^^'

Dreamweaver would be a good choice its pretty easy to use, and if you want, you can always use ready made cool templates, so you only have to modify them. www.elated.com has some non crappy ones. I understand about iWeb and .mac, I just went ahead and purchased .mac account after the 60 free days. I adore my mac, but they sure make life difficult sometimes, lol.

Is Dreamweaver very expensive? I've heard it mentioned before but I'm worried that the cost is out of control.

How do you find .Mac? Is it useful or a pain in the bum? I'm tempted by the whole 'backing up the HD' thing, if nothing else, but I'm worried that they wouldn't allow fanficcy content on the server.

Well, you can try to find it on Limewire:D, or I can upload my copy somewhere--not like I paid for mine either, lol. I like .mac, and I have all my fics on my .mac account here http://web.mac.com/bellamac426/iWeb/Stories%20Untold/home.html

Thanks, this is so helpful! Yay! I *cough* found a copy of Dreamweaver too. I'll be trying it out and hopefully I'll be able to salvage some of the many hours I'd sunk into iWeb -- either that or I'll cave and get a .Mac account... But I'm thinking I'd probably use such a thing for RL sites like a travel blog or something.

Before I moved to Dreamweaver, I used Netscape Composer. It was a very simple web design program. They have a Mac version and it's free. You don't have to use their browser to use the composer.

Thanks! I actually used Netscape Composer way back in the day for my first website, which always felt a bit clunky to me. Now I've been spoiled by having pretty templates (even if they don't work! *kicks iWeb*) I'm not sure I could be happy with my Composer stylings again. But it's an option!

Forgive this breach of netiquette; I wanted to reply belatedly to the post you made on svroundtable, but am too lazy to hunt down said post, so I'll just comment over here--

I really wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed Omiai. I think I first read it a year ago, when I was still too lurky to talk to anybody, but your roundtable post reminded me of it and I've been taking refuge from the fandom nuttiness of the past week by reading it again. And it's truly excellent. So well plotted, all the way through; each new development is a surprise without being jarring or out of character. Thoroughly suspenseful, and completely absorbing, and I love how you've written both Lex and Clark. The sex scenes are SO hot, and each one of them does such a fantastic job of bringing out new aspects of the characters and their emotions. Every bit of reader-gratifying payoff in the story, from the angst to the sex to the schmoop, feels totally earned, if that makes sense. I find myself hoping you've written novels outside the realm of fanfic, too, so that I can go buy them.

Anyway, in an insane week, you've reminded me why I'm so fond of SV fandom in the first place, so thank you.

Dreamweaver is my best friend. :D It's WYSIWYG and for the non-techy person, has excellent tutorials. I have a copy, but I don't know if it would work on a Mac.

I *cough* found a copy myself. Yay! I have NO CLUE what I'm doing but hopefully I'll be able to salvage some of the painstaking editing I had to do on iWeb to reformat all my fic.
